Hay Bale Headband & Hat

The Hay Bale Hat and Headband are the perfect set!  

Headbands are perfect for those of us who wear pony tails.... but want to have our ears be warm!  Hats are a perennial favorite! Both patterns start with the Hay Bale Stitch; a textural band created by elongating stitches on one row and then wrapping them with your working yarn to create a mini Hay Bale on the next. Then ribbing organically grows out of it into the hat or headband.

Plus they match the Hay Bale Mitts!

Materials
Hat- 130 (150) yards of worsted weight yarn (more if making pom-pom)
Headband- 60 (75) yards of worsted weight yarn
Yarn Used: Manos Del Uruguay, Maxima; (100% merino; 218 yd [199 m]/ 100 g),

One US Size 6 [4 mm] 16 inch needle, or size needed to obtain gauge (hat and headband)
One Set US Size 6 [4 mm] double pointed needles, or size needed to obtain gauge (just hat)

1 Stitch marker, Tapestry needle
Pom Pom Maker (Hat- optional)

19 sts x 28 rows= 4 inches in st st, blocked

Finished Measurements
Hat-18 (20)” unstretched, to fit head up to 20 (22)” around.
Headband-16 (18)” unstretched, to fit head up to 20 (23)” around.
